Amp Free drops the training requirement
October 24, 2025 — Amp announced that its free coding agent, Amp Free, no longer requires users to opt into model training. Supported by advertising revenue, the free mode has been adjusted so it can be used for sensitive work code as well as personal projects without the previous training opt-in.
What changed
- Amp Free no longer requires opt-in training, and existing Amp Free users have had training mode turned off automatically.
- Amp Free now meets the same strict security standards as the paid Smart mode, according to Amp’s security documentation. The security page is available here and the note on model training appears here.
How to enable Amp Free
Developers can switch modes after installing or updating Amp. Activation methods include:
- Running
/mode freein the Amp CLI, or - Toggling between smart and free in the editor extension.
Installation and update instructions are on the getting started page: install or update Amp.
Admin controls and availability
Workspace administrators retain control over access:
- Administrators can enable or disable Amp Free for all workspace members from workspace settings. When enabled (the default), a smart / free mode toggle is visible to workspace members.
- Amp Free is not available in Enterprise workspaces.
Amp also acknowledged the role of launch advertisers in supporting the free offering; a visual list of partners appears at /news/launch-partners.svg.
Security and practical implications
The key practical implication is that Amp Free can now be used in contexts where enabling model training was previously a barrier. The alignment of Free’s security posture with Smart suggests a consistent set of protections across paid and free modes, while the advertising-supported model removes the opt-in training dependency.
