Warp adds Cloud Handoff so agents keep running lid-closed

Warp has just rolled out Cloud Handoff, bringing automatic continuity to agent sessions when you close your laptop. The toggle lives under Settings > Agents > Warp Agent > Cloud Handoff, aimed at keeping long-running work from getting interrupted.

TL;DR

  • Cloud Handoff: Agent conversations can continue in the cloud after closing a laptop; live in the latest version
  • Enablement path: Settings > Agents > Warp Agent > Cloud Handoff; credits @DavidPlakon
  • Targets long-running agent sessions that would otherwise be interrupted when a machine is closed
  • Emphasis on continuity between local and cloud execution, rather than restarting sessions
  • Community questions: CLI compatibility, mobile app plans, and support for paid GPT-Gemini-Claude plans
  • Criticism raised: preference for local workarounds; requests to fix login issues over adding features

Warp (posting on X) claims it now lets users close a laptop and have agent conversations automatically hand off to the cloud, a feature the company says is live in the latest version. In a follow-up post, Warp states the feature can be enabled through Settings > Agents > Warp Agent > Cloud Handoff and credits @DavidPlakon for the work.

The announcement appears to target longer-running agent sessions that would otherwise be interrupted when a machine is closed or left behind. Warp’s wording suggests the handoff is meant to preserve continuity between local and cloud execution, rather than forcing a fresh setup each time.

Reaction on X was mixed but generally curious. One user called it “awesome,” another asked whether it works for CLI, and one commenter joked that the update could reduce the need to carry a half-closed laptop through an airport.

Not all responses were positive. One user questioned why Warp would push cloud-based agent runs when a local workaround could apparently achieve a similar result.
