xAI on Thursday introduced an early beta of Grok Build, describing it as an “agentic CLI” for coding, building apps, and automating workflows. The company stated that the tool is currently available only to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers and that the beta will be used to improve the model and product “based on your feedback.”
The post drew a fast response from developers, many of whom focused less on the product itself than on access and pricing. Several commenters questioned why the beta was limited to the Heavy tier, while others argued that a reported “$300/month” entry point would put the tool out of reach for individual developers and smaller teams.
Some replies were more welcoming. A few users praised the idea of an agentic CLI returning attention to the terminal, and one commenter described Grok CLI as “kicking ass” compared with Claude Code. Others framed the launch as part of a broader push toward terminal-based development tools, with one user calling agentic CLI “the new IDE.”
Still, the thread was dominated by skepticism about whether the subscription plan matches the value on offer. Users asked for lower-tier access, free beta availability, pay-as-you-go API support, and broader subscription options. One commenter also suggested that xAI should offer a lower-usage version for SuperGrok users to make the product easier to trial.
Technical questions surfaced as well. In replies, users raised concerns about context limits, memory between sessions, remote MCP support, and how Grok Build might perform on longer build sessions or more structured workflows. Another commenter asked whether the tool could handle full mobile app builds, including emulators, live previews, testing, and deployment, rather than stopping at a CLI experience.
For now, Grok Build appears to be an early test not only of xAI’s coding tooling, but also of how much developers are willing to pay to try it.
