Claude Code adds /checkup to clean skills, plugins, and CLAUDE.md

Claude Code is getting a new /checkup maintenance command aimed at tidying unused skills, MCPs, and plugins. It can also deduplicate and split CLAUDE.md files, disable slow hooks, and update settings to reduce per-session context overhead.

Boris Cherny introduced /checkup in Claude Code as a maintenance command that can clean up unused skills, MCPs and plugins, deduplicate local CLAUDE.md files against the checked-in version, split a root CLAUDE.md into nested files and skills, turn off slow hooks, update Claude Code, enable auto mode by default, and pre-approve frequently denied read-only commands.

A cleanup prompt attached to the post goes further, warning that a test run "overwrote its launcher," that 38 project skills have never been used across 2,345 sessions, and that CLAUDE.md loads about 10k tokens every session. The prompt claims that cleaning everything would repair the install and save roughly 5.5k tokens of context per session, while keeping the changes reversible through one-line toggles and edits that remain visible in git diff before anything is committed.

The menu offers four main choices: "Clean up everything (recommended)," "Let me pick," "No, keep everything," and "Chat about this," along with a custom-input option.
