Claude Code makes auto mode default for paid plans

Claude Code is rolling out auto mode as the default permission mode for Pro, Max, and Team users, ClaudeDevs announced Friday. The mode reviews shell commands and other actions with a separate classifier rather than asking for manual approval each time.

Claude Code makes auto mode the default for paid plans

The rollout includes a safeguard for existing configurations. If a user has already set a default mode, Claude will ask for confirmation before changing it. Modes can still be switched with Shift+Tab, while the defaultMode setting can pin a preferred option.

ClaudeDevs also recommends running /auto-mode-setup to configure auto mode for an environment. The command examines a repository and suggests trusted repositories and domains for review. According to Anthropic’s testing figures, the classifier caught 89% of dangerous commands, compared with 14% for manual approval. Those figures come from Claude’s own testing and were not independently verified in the announcement.
