Thariq (@trq212) now plans to preserve Claude’s plan mode as a customizable feature, after feedback from users who prefer entering a dedicated planning and brainstorming mode. In a post on X, Thariq outlined a proposal to turn plan mode into a built-in mod and allow mods to add new modes or override the Shift+Tab shortcut.
The proposed system would allow the plan mode prompt to be customized, while also supporting the creation and sharing of additional modes. The shortcut could alternatively be rebound to another function.
The update follows an earlier suggestion from Thariq that plan mode might be removed in favor of using Shift+Tab to adjust effort levels. That proposal included the view that models may no longer need a separate plan mode, while inviting feedback from people who rely on it.
Thariq’s latest posts indicate that the feature may remain, but with more flexibility around its prompt, behavior, and keyboard shortcut. No implementation timeline was provided.
