OpenAI has placed its Decisions API in public beta, giving developers a way to route requests to models, tools or agents and select actions based on text or image inputs.
According to OpenAI Developers, the API is powered by GPT-6 Luna and can produce three types of outputs:
- Predicates, which estimate the probability that a statement is true.
- Choices, which select from predefined options and provide confidence scores.
- Scores, which evaluate an input against a numeric range.
OpenAI claims the Decisions API can make decisions “up to 10x faster” than GPT-6 Luna accessed through the Responses API. That comparison is a company-provided performance claim and was not independently substantiated in the announcement.
The company lists several potential uses, including assigning requests to different models or tools, converting inputs into labels and rankings, comparing visual content, identifying video frames, selecting interface controls from screenshots and flagging tool calls for additional review. It also describes the API as suitable for categorizing large datasets to identify trends and patterns.
The public beta is now available to developers through OpenAI’s API platform.
