OpenAI rolls out Codex cloud environments for faster setup

OpenAI is rolling out Codex cloud environments, which the company describes as reusable setups containing a repository’s dependencies, scripts, and settings. OpenAI Developers announced the feature on September 29, stating that it is intended to reduce setup work when starting tasks.

Tasks can be started in the cloud and monitored or directed from a phone or another computer while the laptop remains offline, according to the announcement. OpenAI also claims that the existing desktop app experience is coming to web and mobile.

The rollout includes Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Business and Enterprise workspaces will also be able to share environments, allowing teams to work from the same setup. OpenAI states that a cloud environment can be selected when starting a Codex task across the platforms where Codex is available.
